Welcome back to another episode of The Becoming Podcast, friend!
I’m so excited to share this conversation I had with Olympic diver and author Cassidy Krug. When Cassidy’s book, Resurface: A Guide to Navigating Life’s Biggest Transitions came out, I knew I had to have her on the podcast to share what she learned about how we move through times of radical transformation in our lives from the many amazing folks she interviewed.
First, let me tell you a little bit about Cassidy:
Cassidy Krug is a 2012 Olympian in springboard diving, an author, strategist, and mom based in Los Angeles, California. After representing Team USA in the 3-meter springboard at the 2012 London Olympics, Cassidy built a career as a brand and innovation strategist, helping to create everything from breakfast cereals to health services for new moms. In her debut book, Resurface: A Guide to Navigating Life’s Biggest Transitions, she revisits her retirement from Olympic diving, comparing notes with transitioners from all walks of life and discovering tools to navigate change with less pain and more joy. When she’s not at her desk, you can find her negotiating with her three-year-old, practicing the flying trapeze, or teaching trampoline classes.
Here’s some of what we talk about in our conversation:
✔️ So many incredible stories about how the people Cassidy interviewed for Resurface navigated transition in their lives. I was seriously captivated and in awe of the resilience and wisdom in these narratives.
✔️ The difference between “change,” “transition” and “radical transformation” – how they ask different things of us and hold different potentials for our lives.
✔️ The pervasiveness of the “Hero’s Journey” narrative in the way we portray and think about life transitions and radical transformations in our culture. We talk about how challenging it can be when our lives don’t follow a “heroic” trajectory and are instead more complex and cyclical than we’re taught they “should” be. We also talk about the increase in the number of narratives of midlife women’s lives in the zeitgeist right now, and how midlife women’s lived experiences often problematize the concept of a “Hero’s Journey.”
✔️ The power of ritual to help us have more agency in the way we narrate and think about the story of our life transitions.
✔️ Whether Cassidy found that women go through life transitions differently than men in her research, and what universality exists in the way we navigate change, regardless of where we fall on the gender spectrum or how we were socialized.
…and so much more. This interview is so rich, and you’re going to love it, especially if you’re traversing a time of radical transformation in your life right now, whether you’re changing jobs, are grappling with a new diagnosis, becoming a mother, retiring, or any other transition that feels like it’s changing everything for you.
